The aims and objectives of the Chilcompton Station Project are: to clear the station site of weeds, trees, and rubble. Then erect fencing and restore the station flower beds, station road, and grass the banks. Restore trackbed through the station site and relay track. Then rebuild the former Somerset & Dorset station building, Porters office, and other original buildings, and restore the site to 1950’s condition. The finished site will then be available as a village working museum and meeting point.
At some stage in the future, we plan to connect the heritage line at Midsomer Norton, thus completing the restoration of one, 2 mile section of the former main line, and later extend the line towards Binegar if support is forthcoming. As the project progresses, we will seek a suitable visitors parking site, and sign post the station via the Cattle Creep footpath, from Broadway. These works would largely happen on weekends and be carried out by a mixture of local and other volunteers. We hope to build a valuable resource for all the members of the community to enjoy.
